Depending on your hair texture, different products may work better / worse for you. The key is to understand that black hair care products are designed for hair that is genetically dry with a tendency towards damage (based on the hair follicule). If you are looking at hair relaxers (chemical processes) - the good ones for Afro textured hair are good for Asian as well as Caucasians with afro texture or super thick/curly types of hair. For example Affirm or Mizani (mild) which are top of the line for afro texture are also great for blacks with other hair textures, and Asians, etc...

In terms of straightening balms, etc... I don't find anything to work really great.

Olive Lee Benson, has a shop in Boston, MA called International Textures and she has done a lot of work and consultation with applying "black hair care" products to women with "international textures" - I think more inclusive terms apply here, as many women are mixed heritage and using various products based on hair texture (which surpasses traditional color/race categories).

You can but it's harsher than necessary. The Japanese type straightener is awesome. Your hair will come out silky straight and feeling healthy. It is quite expensive however.
