Hair care for African-American children??? Only people with experience in this area please.?

I have two daughters and they both have very thick hair. It is still natural and I plan to never put a relaxer in their hair. However, it is a hassle. When wet it閳ユ獨 curly and manageable. However, when it閳ユ獨 dry it curls up tightly and looks half it real length. It also gets very dry. I usually have to use hot water, pomade, and brush when doing their hair. Are there any great products that will loosen their curls, keep it moisturized, and make it more manageable? Are naturalaxers really safe for children?

yes. Go to www.etaeproducts.com. They have a treatment called the "carmel treatment". I just used it for the first time and it did wonders for my hair. I have relaxed my hair for years and got tired of it. I am now going natural and haven't had relaxer since May. I have very, very thick coarse hair and the treatment loosened the tight curl pattern in my new growth at the roots. The ends are still relaxed though, so they are still straight. But now I am able to wear my hair out now as if I have it relaxed. It is very manageable and soft. The best thing about the carmel treatment is that it is made with all natural products. I hope I helped you!!!

unless you plan on putting locks or something in their hair your gonna eventually have to put a relaxer in it but wait until they're like seven or six

Go to the forum on nappturality.com they have a lot of tips on there. I read on a topic there that castor oil keeps the hair soft.

That's good that you don't want to relax their hair. Dont ever relax their hair. You will not have to if you take care of it. It all depends on the type of curly hair they have. I would use carrot oil, and olive oil cream to moisturize it. Wrap their hair at night with a satin wrap. No cloth, that will dry out their hair. Make sure that you wash hair once to twice a week. More then that will dry out their hair. Also for ponytails use TCB light hair and scalp conditioner. This really slicks the hair down. Also check out these websites.

I would avoid relaxers altogether. When I was twelve I had a kiddie relaxer put in my hair. It turned my hair brown and a lot of it broke off. There are two simple ways to deal with your daughters hair:

1. Only deal with it when it is wet. As you already know, African American hair that is natural is easy to deal with when it is wet. When it is wet, braid it in a couple of large braids, and then let it air dry (or use a blow dryer if you are in a hurry). One style you could do is to part it in half down the middle of the head, and do a long french braid on each side from the forehead to the nape of the neck. At night, tie up the hair in a silk scarf to keep it neat. In the morning, if it is a little fuzzy on the sides, take a spray bottle filled with warm water, and gently mist the sides of the head. Then use a wide tooth comb to gently smooth the hairs back into place. I would leave this style in for no longer than a week. Avoid using a brush because brushes can cause hair damage. Instead use a wide tooth comb.

2. You could also do a braided style with small cornrows or french braids. Do this when the hair is dry, but use a moisturizing conditioner to keep the hair moisturized while you are working through it. Again, tie the hair up at night to keep the hairstyle neat. And use a widetooth comb to prevent hair damage.

We recommend Northwest Scents products for African American hair. These products are all natural and are very gentle and moisturizing. For information visit http://www.nwscents.com

I've got natural hair and It has really tight curls too. What works best for me is to use the Organics Root Stimulator products to moisturize it morning/night (my hair has always needed moisturizing night and day). Also after I wash it I blow it out a little bit so that the curls get a little straighter so I can get a comb through it (and it makes my afro a bit longer looking too!). Then at night after I moisturize I section my hair off into chunks and put braids in my hair to help it keep it's length, moisture and to help keep my hair's curls from curling up together. Good luck on your daughters' hair!

ok Dontae N is an idiot. It is not inevitable that you will have to relax their hair. there are plenty of women that have never once put a relaxer in their hair!. You can find some curly hair products that will loosen the curl. Mixed Chicks have a line for children that is supposed to be pretty decent. and its not just for biracial children. I have natural black hair and use it
